Meet The Smalls

Bailey: Age 5. Bailey just started kindergarten and loves playing games outside, coloring, swimming, and hanging out with his older sister, Piper. He gets frustrated when he has to go to the hospital and miss out on playing with his friends. He doesn’t really like feeling different, and he can be stubborn when he wants to be – especially when he’s scared.

Piper: Age 7. Piper is 7 going on 17. She’s in second grade and the best speller in her class (she’ll challenge anyone to a contest – she’s the only second grader who knows how to spell “anesthesia”). She wants to be a doctor someday, is fascinated by science and always wants to understand everything that happens with Bailey. She often helps Bailey understand what’s happening in the hospital by explaining things to him in ways others can’t. She likes to think she knows Bailey better than anyone else, and it’s probably true.

Jojo: Age ? We don’t know if Jojo is real or imaginary– but no one but Bailey really knows for sure. Jojo pops up at different points in the story, usually whenever Bailey’s feeling scared or wants to share a secret. He makes his own unique noises to communicate, gives Bailey big hugs when he needs them, and is there to listen to Bailey if he wants to talk.

Granny Treetop: Age not given! Armed with great hugs, a sunny smile, and a handbag full of everything you could possibly need, Granny takes care of Bailey, Piper, and even Jojo too! Granny joins Bailey on all of his trips to the hospital, and provides love, comfort, and even the occasional lost cookie when he needs it.
